Piedmont Plus Senior Games/SilverArts held their kickoff event on Feb. 11 at Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center. The annual event was delayed from January due to weather, but the weather couldn’t have been better for the kickoff as sunshine and Carolina blue skies were the forecast for the day.

A steady stream of past participants and interested newcomers strolled among the 14 vendor booths, including Humana, a provider of Medicare Advantage plans that will be opening a Neighborhood Center soon. Also on site were Iora Primary Care and Oak Street Health, both healthcare providers for seniors on Medicare. The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem had their representatives on hand to talk about the programs, activities and services they provide to older adults in Forsyth County.

Bob Scarborough of WTOB Oldies radio broadcast classic tunes all morning, as well as did interviews and took video of the event for their website. WTOB has been a supportive sponsor of Senior Games/SilverArts for several years, and frequently has Senior Games’ participants on his show to talk about their experiences participating in the games.

There was a drive-thru option for participants this year where they could drive up to the side door and volunteers would take them a bag with registration forms and information, along with coffee or hot chocolate and a doughnut provided by Clutch Coffee.

After visiting the various vendor tables, participants could try their hand at corn hole and maybe win a gift card from Amazon, or enjoy a rousing game of pickleball, one of the favorite Senior Games’ sports.

Registration is now open for Senior Games/SilverArts. Registration forms are available at area recreation centers or online at www.weplay.ws and click on the Senior Games tab.
