SHEPHERD’S CENTER OF GREATER WINSTON-SALEM VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE COMMUNITY RECOGNITION
Volunteers Jim Camp and Cranford Johnson recently received recognition for their service through The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem.
Cranford Johnson received the Governor’s Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award on May 15 at an awards ceremony at Salem College sponsored by HandsOn Northwest North Carolina, the Winston-Salem Journal, and United Way of Forsyth County. Cranford, who retired from UNC’s School of the Arts as Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Counseling, was recognized for 13 years of volunteer service through The Shepherd’s Center in addition to his involvement in other community organizations. Cranford helped develop and implement the Shepherd’s Center’s transportation program for older adults. Starting with just a handful of volunteer drivers, the program now responds to 2,800 requests per year and engages almost 100 volunteers. Cranford continues his volunteer involvement in this program and has also provided service to Parkway United Church of Christ, the Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment, WFDD, and he serves as an usher at the Steven’s Center. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a volunteer who has exhibited a lifelong commitment to volunteerism and community service.
Jim Camp, a retired Baptist minister, was recognized as the recipient of Salemtowne Retirement Community’s Inaugural Senior Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes a volunteer age 62 or above who has shown outstanding efforts and commitment of time, accomplishments, community impact, and enhancement of the lives of others. Jim was honored for his seven years of service through the Minor Home Repair Program of The Shepherd’s Center. As the program’s lead volunteer, Jim travels an average of 5,000 miles a year going to the homes of clients to assess repair needs and coordinate assignments with other volunteers. This program responds annually to over 500 repair requests from older adults in Forsyth County. Jim and his wife, Joyce, along with other nominees, were honored at a luncheon at Salemtowne on May 22. The award included a $1000 gift which Jim designated for The Shepherd’s Center.
