On Thursday, May 2, hundreds of avid book enthusiasts lined up at the Education Building at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds to be able to get the wonderful bargains offered at the Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem 26th annual used book sale. Many were there with carts and containers to get to hundreds of tables loaded with thousands of books. Over 100,000 books and other media were available for sale.  An estimated 1,500 people came over a three day period and the sale brought in over $53,900 for the programs and services the Shepherd’s Center provides for older adults.

“Donations come from the community, and the proceeds of the annual sale go back into services for older adults in the community,” noted Executive Director Sam Matthews. “You can truly say that what comes in from our community goes back into the community — the ultimate recycling event!”, he added.

Donations are accepted year-round from individuals, schools, libraries, congregations and retirement communities. Once the sale was completed, many leftover items were donated to Goodwill Industries, the Salvation Army, and a number of school-based programs.
