Winston-Salem Urban League will use Spectrum Support to Fund  Digital Certification Program for Seniors

GREENSBORO, NC –Jan. 16, 2025 – Spectrum today announced Winston-Salem Urban League has received a $15,000 grant through its 2024 Spectrum Digital Education program. This year, the program is awarding a total of $1.3 million to 66 organizations. Since launching in 2017, Spectrum Digital Education has committed more than $10 million to nonprofits focused on improving digital literacy, workforce development and educational access in unserved and undeserved communities across Charter’s 41-state service area.

Funding will support various programs to educate seniors by providing digital literacy training, certification, year-long exposure to a digital navigator and access to various technology devices.

“Connectivity is the foundation for meaningful learning, professional growth and human connection, and helps to build strong, thriving communities,” said Geoff Banning, Area Vice President for Spectrum. “Spectrum Digital Education supports programs that empower community members to enhance their lives with connectivity, from providing digital literacy training to seniors to connecting students with important resources and tools for their education.”

A check presentation will take place at the Tech Up class on Friday, January 17 at 11 a.m. at the Winston-Salem Urban League Event Center at 510 Trade Street, Winston-Salem.

“Technology is a driving force in everything we do,” said state Rep. Amber Baker. “I applaud Spectrum for their dedication to addressing the growing need for digital literacy skills throughout our community.”

Through direct support of nonprofit partners across Spectrum’s service area, Spectrum Digital Education has helped distribute over 18,500 laptops and sponsor more than 40,000 digital education classes, benefiting over 163,000 community members since 2017. This year, Winston-Salem Urban League is one of 66 nonprofit organizations that has been awarded a 2024 Spectrum Digital Education grant.

“Through our partnership with Spectrum, the Winston-Salem Urban League is bridging the gap and connecting seniors to the digital world,” said James Perry, President and CEO, Winston-Salem Urban League. “Spectrum’s support enables us to expand our Digital Certification Program and reach more seniors in Forsyth County. Through this program, seniors gain the skills and confidence needed to get connected and thrive in today’s increasingly digital society.”
