St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 810 N. Highland Ave., will celebrate Saint Augustine’s University Day on March 13 at 11:00 a.m. Everett B. Ward, the president of the school, will be the speaker.  The University Choir under the direction of Kimberly Dunn will perform. Lunch will follow.

Dr. Everett B. Ward, president of Saint Augustine’s University, Raleigh, was named the eleventh president on April 10, 2015. He is the third alumnus to hold the post in the 149-year history of Saint Augustine’s University.

Dr. Ward was appointed by the Saint Augustine’s University Board of trustees on April 23, 2014 as interim president.  During his appointment, Ward put forth an aggressive agenda focused primarily on three key areas: (1) returning the institution to financial stability; (2) strengthen-ing the faith of students, employees and alumni in the viability of the institution; and (3) engaging the community and corporate stakeholders for mutually beneficial partnerships and collaborations.  Transparency, shared governance and collaboration are the cornerstone of his administration.

Prior to his appointment as interim president, Dr. Ward served as the director of the Historically Black Colleges and University Minority Institutions of Higher Education pro-gram for the N.C. Department of Transportation.

As a dedicated servant leader, Dr. Ward serves on several national, regional and statewide boards to advance opportunities for citizens throughout the nation. In 1983, Ward was named special assistant to the chairman of the N.C. Democratic Party and subsequently was named political director.  As a result of his political achievements, Dr. Ward made history in 1989 as the first African-American executive director of the N.C. Democratic Party.

Dr. Ward has chaired two university advisory boards. From 2009-2011, he was chairman of the Board of trustees of Saint Augustine’s University, his family’s beloved alma mater.

Dr. Ward was born on the campus at St. Agnes Hospital.  He continued his family’s tradition by receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Augustine’s College. He earned a Master of Arts degree from North Carolina State University.  In 2003, Ward earned a Ph.D. from NC A&T State University’s School of Education.

Dr. Ward currently serves as vice chairman of the Association of Episcopal Colleges and Universities and recently accepted an appointment to the Board of Visitors of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh.

Dr. Ward is a lifelong member of Davie Street Presbyterian Church USA where he is a Ruling Elder and member of the Presbyterian Men’s Council.  Dr. Ward is also a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
