Local high school artists were honored for their work on April 18 at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.

Nicholas Milligan, a student at Mount Tabor High School, was named the 2013 Artizens first place winner. Wilbert Alvarez, a student at North Forsyth High School, was the honorable mention winner.

This year, 80 students from 16 area high schools competed in Artizens, Piedmont Federal Savings Bank’s annual search for the most talented young artists.  Piedmont Federal sponsors Artizens because of the importance of the arts to the region – and the fact that involvement in the arts seems to contribute to students’ success in school, said Wanda Merschel, chief marketing officer for Piedmont Federal.

Milligan received a $500 prize; the art department at Mount Tabor also received $500. Alvarez and his school’s art department each received $300 prizes.

The winners were selected by a panel of judges that included John Blackburn, singer Clare Fader and the Arts Council’s Susan Morris.
