Kimberley Park Elementary School students and their families took part in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

The goals of the Walk to School Day movement are diverse, and include everything from  trimming the waistlines of young people to pushing for more sidewalks, pathways and other safe routes for students. The Day is an important part of Safe Routes to School, an international program that encourages communities to make it safer for more children to walk and bike to school. The Safe Routes to School Program for the Winston-Salem Urban Area is sponsored by the City of Winston-Salem Department of Transportation.

Walk to School Day began in 1997. Kimberley Park has been taking part since 2008. Its students  joined with other students from across the United States and 38 countries around the world on Oct. 3.

The weather was perfect for the more than 65 Kimberley students who took part. Each student was given a participation sticker that they could wear with pride throughout the school day, along with a special wristband in the school’s colors.
