Students pick Brooks for teaching honor
DeAnne D. Brooks, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Greensboro College, received the 2014 Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award during the Alumni Awards Convocation and Senior Investiture on April 5.
The award is based on the quality of a candidate’s classroom teaching, including laboratory, studio or other teaching settings.
Brooks “is well-known in this community for actively organizing students to create and to attend events that advance their educational experiences so they may observe theoretical concepts in practice,” Paul J. Leslie, vice president for academic affairs, said in presenting the award to Brooks.
“Indeed, she is an active and contributing professional who has demonstrated excellence in teaching, an authentic willingness to serve others, and a deep abiding concern for the success of her students,” he added.
Every semester, Brooks organizes poster sessions of her students’ internships in which her students offer their analyses of the world observed, thus helping others learn from their experiences.
Brooks also participates in the conferences of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the American College of Sports Medicine; the National Strength and Conditioning Association; and the National Conference on Girls and Women in Sport and Physical Activity.
She organized and hosted at Greensboro College a conference for the Black Women in Sport Foundation that drew collegiate coaches and female athletic administrators from all over the South to discuss how they could support the wellness of African American girls and young women.
She has served on the Board of Directors of the National Organization for the Advancement of Physical Activity for Girls and Women in Sport, as well as several committees of that organization. She advises Greensboro College’s Kinesiology Club. She also has served or continues serving as co-advisor of the United-African-American Student Club and a member of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee, the Academic Review Commission, and several other college governance councils and committees.
She is a frequent invited speaker in high schools, colleges and athletic associations to speak on topics related to her research expertise – sexual violence and coaching, and health-related physical activity after college.
Brooks earned a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in exercise and sport science; an M.Ed. from the University of Georgia in clinical exercise physiology; and an Ed.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in kinesiology. Brooks joined the Greensboro College faculty in 2010; this is her first full-time teaching position.
