Nonprofit offers month-long suggestions to celebrate National Women’s History Month during March

The Legacy Foundation for Women is a 501c3 philanthropic organization with a mission to pay it forward, celebrate, and invest in the lives of women and girls of color. “Celebrating women is what we do!” says CEO and founder, Alicia M. Bailey, who is a gospel recording artist, minister, author, and educator.

Bailey founded the organization with a specific purpose in mind. “I did not grow up in the best neighborhood, but because of a dedicated family, church, and community leaders that invested in me, I was given amazing opportunities. As a result, I started the Legacy Foundation for Women that pays it forward and invests in the lives of other women and girls of color through award recognition, scholarships/education, and other initiatives,” said Bailey.

Each year the foundation offers and awards scholarships to deserving girls of color from various high schools in the community. Legacy scholarship recipients have attended schools such as Winston-Salem State, Appalachian State, UNC Charlotte, and others.

The scholarship funds are obtained solely through donations and the organization’s largest fundraising event, its prestigious “Legacy Lady Awards,” hosted annually recognizing women of color who are leaving a legacy in their communities. In years past, the event has been a highly anticipated black-tie affair complete with red carpet, entertainment, and prominent attendees including Mayor Allen Joines. Various companies have donated to the cause such as Novant Health, Reynolds American, Triad Radiology, Jewelry Unique, and the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Although the foundation’s mission is to celebrate women and girls of color, during the month of March their initiative expands beyond women of color. In March, the foundation will launch its “I AM WOMAN” campaign in celebration of all women for National Women’s HIstory Month. The Legacy Foundation for Women invites women of all races to join the movement in March. The “I AM WOMAN” campaign challenges women to show acts of kindness to other women throughout the month. On March 8, National Women’s Day, at 9 a.m., the organization is encouraging all women to pause for a moment of silence to salute women throughout history who have made an impact on others. Below is a list of events for the “I AM WOMAN” campaign sponsored by Legacy Foundation for Women.
