Dr. Brenda Allen, the provost at Winston-Salem State University since 2009, has recently been recognized for her achievements by local, regional and statewide organizations.
On April 18, Allen was honored by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of North Carolina with a Woman of Achievement Award.  The award recognizes outstanding women for their significant contributions to the State of North Carolina.

Allen was recognized by The Business Journal during their annual Women in Business Expo and Awards Luncheon on April 26.  The awards presented celebrate the outstanding contributions of the Triad’s leading businesswomen.  In addition to the awards luncheon, Dr. Allen was featured in the April 26 edition of the weekly publication.

Today (May 16), the YWCA of Winston-Salem will present Allen with one of its 2013 Women of Vision awards for her contributions to education.  The YWCA annually recognizes women who have made significant contributions to the community through their vision and their achievements.

During her tenure, Allen has led the charge to completely revamp the university’s curriculum to align it with the goal of helping graduates achieve success in the challenging 21st century marketplace.  She also has been one of the chief architects of the “Restore the Core” plan, which will change the campus by adding a new student center and residence hall, in addition to the renovation of Hill Hall into the Student Success Center.

As provost, Allen serves as the university’s chief academic officer and is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of academic programs and policies.  In addition to the academic units, she is responsible for the IT area, institutional planning, assessment and research, UCaLL, enrollment management, Honors College and several of the Centers on campus.
