Walk to honor two women of God

The Cancer Survivor Faith Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 beginning at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Union Baptist Church, 1200 N. Trade St.
The walk – sponsored by Union and Emmanuel Baptist Church, honors Union’s Mother Frances J. Mack (the mother of Pastor Dr. Sir Walter Mack) and First Lady Sarah Mendez of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Both women are cancer survivors.

The annual walk is held to thank God for deliverance from cancer and to encourage those who are battling the illness.

“We want to bring awareness and help educate people about ways to lower risks to prevent cancer of all types, not only breast cancer,” Mack and Mendez said in a joint statement. “This is a great way for families and friends to come together to honor and remember those affected with cancer.”
The Cancer Faith Walk is about a mile and a half. Walkers will head down Trade Street to Northwest Boulevard and then to Liberty Street. From there, they will walk to 14th Street, turning right on Cameron Avenue and ending at the Character Football League field at Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy. (Union is the sponsor of the Character Football League.)

Runners and riders (those on bikes, motorcycles and in cars) are also welcome to take part. Shuttles will be provided at the football field to transport participants back to the church.  The walk is open to the community.  There is no fee. Registration will be held on-site beginning at 9 a.m.
