Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools names new district leaders

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education has given approval to the naming of Diana McIntosh, Carlos Valencia, and Kim Bell as directors of school improvement and Dr. Sajata Latten as the new executive director of Core Content – Teaching and Learning.  

The directors of school improvement are new positions meant to provide on-site improvement services and support to turnaround schools that are identified by the state as Title I, Targeted (TSI) or Comprehensive (CSI) Support and Improvement schools.   

Diana McIntosh has served as the assistant principal at Eastway Elementary in Durham since 2016. Prior to that, she spent a year as an instructional facilitator for Durham Public Schools. She spent two years as the supervisor of student achievement with Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania. Earlier in her career, she was an academic dean in Delaware. She has also spent time as a multilingual manager and English as a Second Language facilitator.  McIntosh started her career spending more than ten years as an elementary school teacher.   

McIntosh earned a bachelor’s degree from Chestnut Hill College. She has three master’s degrees from Arcadia University.

Carlos Valencia has served as a fourth-grade teacher at Diggs-Latham Elementary since 2019. Prior to that, he spent three years as a teacher at Easton Elementary. Earlier in his career, he served one year as teacher in the Denver Public Schools, one year as a teacher at Quality Education Academy, and three years as a teacher at Konnoak Elementary.   

Valencia earned his bachelor’s degree from Universidad Santo Tomás Bogotá. He has a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a graduate dertificate from Duke University. 

Kim Bell has served as an instructional specialist in Wilkes County Schools since 2010. Prior to that, she spent four years as a teacher for Wilkes County. 

Bell earned a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University. She has a master’s degree from Western Governors University. 

Dr. Sajata Latten has served as the director of mathematics for Philadelphia Schools since 2018. Prior to that, she was a school improvement coach with Fulton County Schools for two years. Earlier in her career, she spent nine years as a math teacher and two years as an end of course assessment reviewer.  Latten started her career spending three years as a math teacher for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. 

Latten earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida A & M University. She has a master’s degree from Liberty University and a doctorate from Mercer University.
