The cultural elements of Hip-Hop were on full display on March 22nd in Winston-Salem State University’s new DJR Center. Hip-Hop Is Reality (HHIR) was coined several years ago when Chelli Broussard, Coordinator of University Student Activities & Engagement, and member of the North Carolina chapter of the Universal Zulu Nation, decided to share the culture and history of Hip-Hop in an academic setting.

The ‘Academy’ was part of the finale that included three days of panels, exhibitions, screenings, competitions, and more. Members of the community, from young to old were on hand to learn and participate in the arts of: deejaying, emceeing/writing, graffiti, and breakdancing.

Kids, parents, grandparents and students were all encouraged to engage in one of the elements, specifically. Free lunch was served to all of the participants and culminated in a showcase at the end of the four-hour ‘academy’, where results from learned Bboy moves, creative writing sessions, graffiti sketches, and turntable techniques could be shared.
