Nineteen plaques will be handed out Saturday, March 23 at The Chronicle’s 28th Annual Community Service Gala. Accepting them will be well-deserving local men and women whose contributions have created a better city, state, nation and, in some cases, world.

As previously announced, Winston-Salem State Head Football Coach Connell Maynor will receive the Man of the Year award; the Woman of the Year prize will go to Linda Jackson-Barnes, assistant to Mayor Allen Joines.

Rounding out the awardees are –

•Wake Forest University School of Medicine’s Dr. Medge D. Owen will receive the Human Relations Award for founding Kybele, which has helped decrease the number of newborns and mothers who die in developing countries during child-birth.

•The Black Philanthropy Initiative of the Winston-Salem Foundation will receive the Organization of the Year Award for financially supporting a number of community efforts.

•Ishi Pentecostal Temple will receive the Church of the Year Award for constantly lifting up its congregation and its neighbors. •NBA stand-out Chris Paul and the Paul Family will receive the Legend Award for their countless local good deeds.

•Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy Principal Richard K. Watts will receive a Special Recognition Award for his decades of stellar service to students.

•Forsyth Medical Center’s Dr. Chere Chase-Gregory will receive a Special Recognition Award for her career achievements and community outreach efforts.

•The Forsyth County Hispanic American Democrats will receive a Special Recognition Award for helping to bring issues important to the Hispanic community to the foreground.

•Retired educator Nathaniel Barber will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for dedicating his life to educating and leading young people.

•Clementine Shaw will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to the nursing profession and the community.

•Union Baptist Church Music Director Walteria Spaulding will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for her many decades of commitment to the ministry of music.

•Old Salem Museum and Gardens’ Cheryl Harry will receive a Curator of the African American Arts Award for her efforts to spotlight black history and culture.

•Musician Calvin Napper will receive a Curator of the African American Arts Award for making his hometown proud as one of the nation’s foremost drummers.

•Phyllis Walker will receive a Community Service Award for her efforts to register and educate voters.

•Miracles Outreach International Ministries’ Pastor Eyvette Abbott will receive a Community Service Award for implementing a strong community outreach strategy.

•College students Angie Caesar and Raven Scales will receive Community Service Awards for giving back through tutoring and volunteering.

•Forsyth County Government’s Patrice Toney will receive a Community Service Award for her longtime commitment to non-profits organizations and community service.

As in past years, this year’s winners were selected by a panel of community leaders from a pool of nominations, many submitted by Chronicle readers.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright, pastor emeritus of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, will deliver the keynote address at the gala. Wright is the former pastor of President Obama and the Obama family.
