This week James McKnight will celebrate a milestone – his 100th birthday!

McKnight, who was born Jan. 9, 1925, moved to Winston-Salem when he was a young man and found employment at R.J. Reynolds. For more than 30 years McKnight worked as a chief flavor handler at Reynolds.

While working at Reynolds, McKnight started attending Goler Memorial AME Zion Church and that’s where he met his  future wife, Margiesteene. The McKnights have one daughter, Sharron, and have been happily married for 70 years. When asked what advice he would give to young couples, The McKnights said it’s important to have some of the same interests, but the key is trust. “You have to trust each other and have faith,” McKnight said.

In 1991, James and Margiesteene started attending John Wesley AME Zion Church, where they are still members. While at John Wesley, James has served as a faithful member of the men’s choir, senior choir, kitchen committee, van driver, and class leader.

Those who know McKnight describe him as someone who always has a smile on his face and is willing to go the extra mile to lend a helping hand. McKnight, who is known as “Mack” by his friends, is also known for his wardrobe. Every Sunday it seems as if he’s pulled out a new suit to wear. “That’s just how we were raised. When you went outside, you looked like something,” McKnight said.

McKnight plans to celebrate his 100th birthday with cake and ice cream at home, surrounded by family and friends.

The Chronicle staff would like to wish James McKnight a very Happy Birthday!
