The Minister’s Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity (MCWSV) recently held their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship service. The program was held at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.

To date, the conference has awarded over $250,000 worth of scholarships over the years. This year the conference handed out $16,000 worth of scholarships to 16 seniors from around the area.

The students who received scholarships are: Nyah Rice, Shayla Muldovan, Nickols Childs, Meshavia Butler, Daisy Cotton, Nicholas Cotton, Erick Gambrell, Arthur Ward, Tramond Cobb, Bryonnie Codrington, Makayla Morton, Kade Jones, Jonathon Taylor, Brittany Shuff, Sydney Rorie and Oluwabunkola Ojo.

The church was packed with family, friends and loved ones of the scholarship recipients. James Taylor, City Council member for the Southeast Ward and publisher of The Chronicle, delivered the message during the service.

“I think this worship service was excellent, on time and it was inspirational,” said Tembila Covington, president of the MCWSV. “There were some good words of wisdom that were given, but the success is not simply in the message, but in all the work that took place beforehand to get up to the $16,000 that we raised.”

The $16,000 given to the students was the largest amount ever given out in one service. Covington said the conference was honored to assist the students with their higher education aspirations.

“We are excited to be able to put this money together for these young people that are going off to college and we know that they are going to be very successful,” she said. “The word was on time and it could not have been delivered any better. From the person that it came from, it was awesome, because he has a hand in helping to raise these funds.

“The Chronicle gave $3,000 this year and that was to jumpstart us and that was an opportunity for us to get some leverage and from then on, it was nothing but golden.”

The students were elated to receive this assistance from the conference. Many of the students stated the scholarship will assist with books and supplies.

“This scholarship is very important, because some families just don’t have the money to take care of everything,” said Kade Jones. “I will mainly use this scholarship for books, because we all know that books are expensive.”

Jonathon Taylor added, “I am really excited and this will help me with my career choice. I am extremely gracious and thankful for this scholarship.”
