The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools BELL Summer Success Program at Philo-Hill Middle School, which ran from  June 24  through July 26, offered a diverse enrichment program to local students.

Instructors included Stacey Stephens (art), Lori Tyson (dance), Christina Archer (family and consumer science), Donna Hall and Chris Webster (science), Kara Brooks (poetry), Lee Harris (Latin), Cynthia Parker (financial literacy),  Elliott Lowery (the Dare to Be King program) and Felecia Piggott-Long (the Dare to Be Queen program).

The program manager at Philo-Hill was Leigh Walters, and the assistant program manager was Kesha Dawson. Carmen Garcia served as the program coordinator, and Karen Gregory Archie was the lead teacher.

The Dare to Be Queen and Dare to Be King curriculums offered empowerment activities to female and male students, respectively. They met role models from the community and discussed issues that directly affect them such as goal-setting, relationships, family concerns, community service and career plans.

Those in the Queens program heard from four special guests over the course of the summer —  attorneys Dionne Tunstall Jenkins and Trina Flowers; Patricia Petty, Vice President, U. S. Franchise Development at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts; and Eleanor Phillips-Fipps, a social worker for the Philo-Hill BELL Summer Program.

The young women also took a number of field trips, including visits to the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville and Calahan Farm in Mocksville.

BELL, which stands for Building Educated Leaders for Life, offers acclaimed summer and after-school programs that it contracts with school systems to offer all over the country.
